Anno triste il 2018: dopo la fine della storica ed amatissima LATO, arriva il momento della demolizione per un’altra protagonista dell’epopea dei cruise-ferry greci degli anni ’90, la CARRIBBEAN GALAXY, che chiunque in Grecia conosce e ricorda maggiormente col nome di DAEDALUS e con i colori di Minoan Lines. Il 16 dicembre, infatti, la storica nave ha lasciato Perama al rimorchio del CHRISTOS XXXIV con destinazione Aliaga, ultima spiaggia della nave e, ironia della sorte, ultima destinazione anche della storica rivale ANEK demolita qualche mese prima…e chissà, nel cuore di ogni appassionato di navi, quale può essere il pensiero nel sapere che due navi che per larga parte della loro carriera hanno “combattuto”, hanno vissuto vicino la propria agonia e sono finite a pochi metri di distanza; personalmente, posso solo essere contento di aver avuto la fortuna di immortalare per un’ultima volta entrambi i traghetti pochi giorni prima del loro ultimo viaggio, riuscendo a dare loro un’addio; mentre le celebrazioni della LATO devono ancora proseguire su queste pagine, ricordiamo anche la DAEDALUS, nave alla quale sono indubbiamente meno legato e che merita il giusto saluto, per l’importanza che ha rivestito nelle nostre acque.
Negli anni ’70, a far la voce grossa nella cantieristica giapponese, tra i vari Kanda, Koyo e Naikai, c’era indubbiamente anche il cantiere Hayashikane, oggi assorbito dal colosso cantieristico Mitsubishi Heavy Industries; prima dell’avvento dei tre diamanti, comunque, il cantiere dell’estremità meridionale dell’isola di Honshu, a pochi chilometri dalla più conosciuta Hiroshima, assemblava navi dalla linea elegante, molto capienti e veloci; prodotto di Hayashikane sono anche le tre ro/ro gemelle di Adriatica di Navigazione, poi passate a Tirrenia come SARDEGNA, SICILIA e CALABRIA. All’inizio degli anni ’70, comunque, dopo aver consegnato alla Meimon Car Ferry due gemelle delle quali una è stata nota dalle nostre parti come EL GRECO, il cantiere di Shimonoseki ottiene un’ordine per quattro gemelle da parte di Taiyo Ferry, evoluzione del precedente progetto che aveva dato la luce alla FERRY ATSUTA, del quale la presente nave, col nome di ORION, rappresenta la capostipite; dopo di lei, la seconda e la quarta nave sono altrettanto arrivate in Grecia, rispettivamente la APTERA di Anek Lines e la SEA TRAILER di Express Sea Trailers e quindi Hellas Ferries, mentre la terza, dopo il Giappone, ha finito la propria carriera nelle Filippine, altro paese che, come la Grecia, ha fatto largamente acquisti in Giappone per le proprie navi.
Il gruppo di quattro navi prevede una lunghezza di 140 metri, 22 di larghezza, 21,5 nodi di velocità di crociera ed una capiente stiva da 1000 metri lineari di carico; una volta consegnata, a febbraio 1973, per quattro anni fa la spola tra Osaka e Kanda, quindi, nel 1977, viene fermata, anche a seguito dell’unione degli sforzi di Taiyo Ferry con Meimon Car Ferry. Parte quindi un lungo periodo di lay-up, intervallato da un noleggio alla Fuji Ferry, quindi nel 1980 passa alla Kansai Kisen, che la rinomina FERRY NISHIKI MARU, per la linea da Osaka e Kobe verso Beppu. Nel 1984, torna alla Meimon Taiyo Ferry, riprendendo il nome di ORION, tra Osaka e Shin Moji, finché nel 1989 ad acquistarla è Minoan Lines, che le attribuisce il nome DAEDALUS, architetto mitologico autore del labirinto nel quale fu racchiuso il Minotauro, dopo una brevissima parentesi nella quale la nave ha portato il nome di WIEW OF NAGASAKI.
Il lavoro di restyling della nave è realmente profondo, e comporta la realizzazione di ponti passeggeri anche nella quasi totalità del garage superiore, con gli interni opera di Arminio Lozzi, notissimo interior designer realizzatore di tanti saloni dei cruise-ferry greci degli anni ’90 ed anche “papà” del dinosauro Dino dei Flintstones nella sua precedente esperienza lavorativa alla Hanna & Barbera. La nave che esce fuori, sfoggiando un’eleganza unica, forse la più riuscita anche rispetto alle navi simili uscite dai cantieri di Perama (si pensi ad esempio alla APTERA ed alla quasi gemella EL GRECO), ed offre quanto di più si possa chiedere ad una nave in quegli anni, con un ponte totalmente dedicato all’entertainment e fornito di ristorante, self service, bar, piscina esterna, sala giochi per bimbi, negozi, casinò, discoteca al ponte superiore, oltre a ben 900 posti in cabina.
Pensata per un collegamento internazionale Pireo – Istanbul, quando nel 1991 la Daedalus appare per la prima volta negli orari Minoan Lines, invece serve la Ancona – Igoumenitsa – Corfu – Patrasso, servizio principe internazionale della compagnia basata ad Heraklion, onere condiviso tra il 1991 ed il 1994, con, in diversi periodi, FEDRA, ARIADNE, EL GRECO, KING MINOS. Nel 1995, anno della rivoluzione Superfast in Adriatico, Minoan Lines unisce i propri sforzi agli storici concorrenti di Strintzis Lines, in joint-venture, per meglio assorbire il colpo proveniente dai nuovi competitor tra Italia e Grecia: inizialmente le due compagnie progettano un servizio con sette navi che svolgano, nella settimana, un servizio consistente nel viaggio Patrasso – Corfu – Igoumenitsa – Trieste – Igoumenitsa – Corfu – Patrasso ed un viaggio Patrasso – Corfu – Igoumenitsa – Ancona – Igoumenitsa – Corfu – Patrasso, con partenze giornaliere da tutti i porti alla stessa ora; tuttavia questo servizio viene emendato, abbandonando l’idea Trieste ed invece creando due distinti servizi, uno da Patrasso, Igoumenitsa e Corfu per Ancona, ed uno da Patrasso, Igoumenitsa e Corfu per Venezia, al quale la DAEDALUS è assegnata assieme alle compagne di flotta EL GRECO e FEDRA ed alla IONIAN ISLAND di Strintzis Lines. La linea di Venezia verrà mantenuta anche dal 1997 in poi, quando le strade di Minoan e Strintzis si dividono: da allora in avanti, servirà la laguna assieme a varie compagne di flotta, tra cui la solita FEDRA, rimasta in linea fino al 2000, la FESTOS, per il solo 1997, la EROTOKRITOS, quindi addirittura la ARETOUSA dal 1998.
Col rinnovamento radicale della flotta di Minoan Lines, nel 2001 arriva a Venezia anche la nuova PROMETHEUS; la DAEDALUS tuttavia, nonostante dal 1999 sia passata alla consociata Minoan Flying Dolphins, non viene spodestata dalla linea che svolge fin dal 1995 e va a completare l’offerta di ARETOUSA, EROTOKRITOS e PROMETHEUS, con un massacrante orario che prevede una partenza alle 16 il mercoledì da Venezia, con arrivo venerdì mattina a Patrasso via Corfu ed Igoumenitsa, quindi ripartenza alle ore 10.30 per Igoumenitsa e Venezia, con arrivo alle 21.30 di sabato in laguna (penso mai siano esistite partenze così presto da Patrasso), quindi da Venezia il sabato alle 24 per Igoumenitsa e Patrasso, ove arriva il Lunedì alle 13.00 e da dove riparte in serata per Corfu, Igoumenitsa e Patrasso. Questa è appunto l’ultima stagione adriatica della nave: nel 2002 rimpiazza la quasi gemella EL GRECO sulla lunga linea che collega Salonicco ad Heraklion, toccando, in alcune partenze, i porti di Volos, Skiathos, Tinos, Syros, Myconos, Paros, Naxos e Santorini.
La carriera in Grecia prosegue con grandi consensi, e pure con qualche sporadica apparizione sul servizio principe Pireo – Heraklion; all’inizio del 2005 tuttavia, cominciano a diffondersi le prime voci di un’imminente cessione della nave, dovuta anche alla non ottimale situazione finanziaria della compagnia; mentre non arriva alla conclusione la trattativa con Saos Ferries, a giugno 2005 viene invece annunciata la vendita alla Adria Ferries, la compagnia che è subentrata ad Adriatica nel collegamento Ancona – Durazzo abbandonato dalla compagnia statale italiana, la quale la rinomina RIVIERA ADRIATICA per sostituire la RIVIERA DEL CONERO, affetta da gravi noie meccaniche che addirittura pare ne pregiudicassero il proseguo della carriera. Ironia della sorte, quest’ultima oggi è ancora fra noi, dato che qualche mese dopo l’arrivo della RIVIERA ADRIATICA, viene rimessa in sesto; per questo la ex-Daedalus viene noleggiata ad Algerie Ferries per le stagioni estive 2006, 2007 e 2008 sui collegamenti da Marsiglia all’Algeria. Dal dicembre 2008, la RIVIERA ADRIATICA passa invece a servire la Bari – Durazzo, linea sulla quale rimane fino a gennaio 2016, anche se dal 2012 prende il nome di AF CLAUDIA PRIMA e bandiera italiana.
Nel 2016 la nave viene infatti venduta a non meglio precisati armatori, che la rinominano CARIBBEAN GALAXY, con inedite insegne sullo scafo che portano il nome di Atlantic Blue Seaways. Non ancora ben chiaro l’utilizzo al quale sarà dedicata la nave, per l’estate viene annunciato il suo noleggio a Grimaldi Lines per la linea Livorno – Barcellona – Tangeri. L’accordo tuttavia si arena, pare per l’impossibilità della nave di ottenere i certificati, per cui, dopo un breve periodo a Lavrion, la nave viene fermata a Perama, dalla quale riparte per l’ultimo viaggio questo dicembre. Salutiamo un’altro pezzo di storia che se ne va.
